Last year, we ended our study of the spiritual realm by discussing Satan and how he deceives the world about God. As a continuation of that topic, we will discuss a movie entitled Pilgrim’s Progress about John Bunyan’s book. Written in1678 and 1684 in England, this book was second only to the Bible in readership up until the mid-twentieth century. It is considered to be the most popular Christian allegory of all time and has been translated into more than 200 languages. This narrative describes the difficult journey that every believer makes in this life in pursuit of salvation and a heavenly destination while Satan and a sinful world strive to derail our objective. When we have completed Pilgrim’s Progress, we will study Peter 1 and Peter 2 which just so happens to be written to suffering pilgrims living in the northern territory of modern day Turkey. These first century Christians were facing persecution from the Roman empire and Peter’s epistles encouraged them to live in accordance with their heavenly inheritance.

The Fellowship Class is an adult class made up of both men and women, couples, and singles. Our ages vary anywhere from 55 and above. Sometimes way above! All ages are welcome. We enjoy studying books written by famous theologians and books of the Bible. Our studies may include a short video, scripture, some lecture, but always discussion. We like to share our experiences and learn from each other. Different members of the class are leaders of our studies and usually change every 4-6 weeks. We enjoy a short fellowship time before each lesson begins, where our members often bring a delicious treat to share with our coffee. We have a huge new coffee pot, so please join us in the Library each Sunday morning after worship for fellowship, study, making new friends, and being part of this wonderful body of Christ here at First Presbyterian, Jackson. Some of the topics we plan to study in the upcoming Sunday School year include: The Chosen, Jesus the King by Timothy Keller, God Never Gives Up on You by Max Lucado, The Great Divorce by C S Lewis, Don’t Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table by Louie Giglio, Fundamentals of the Faith by John MacArthur, and The History of Sunday School.

“Disciple.” Are you one? You’ve heard the word, but what does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? The word “discipleship” comes from a Greek word that means “follower” or “learner.” Do we really want to be followers of Jesus? We follow people on Facebook. We follow politicians, and athletic teams, and the stock market, but do we follow Jesus? What does it mean to follow him anyway? The Connections Class will begin the year by using the “Follow Me” curriculum to discover and discuss the different elements of discipleship. Discipleship meant one thing to the first Apostles, but perhaps the meaning has changed for us. Do we have access to the same spiritual power that embraced the first Apostles on Pentecost? Our class will be a discussion class, and we will seek to understand the topic of discipleship as it applies to us in 2024. We will use a curriculum, videos, and of course scripture to guide our discussions. We will also seek to put our discipleship into action by identifying and conducting a mission project during the Fall. Please come join us as we learn more about who Jesus calls us to be in 2024-2025! Oh yeah – we also have great food most Sunday mornings, and plan to have a party or two as well! Following can be fun!

WISDOM 20/20

What is most important in life? Sometimes, it is not until we can look back over our life that we can clearly see what matters the most. We invite you to embrace the message of three of our congregational members as they reflect upon their life experiences and share their thoughts on relationships, career, community, country and their faithful service to God. May their seeds of wisdom produce a great harvest in your life.
